What to see in Chaves

Must-sees

Chaves, the Roman Aquae Flaviae, has kept a sixteen-arch Roman bridge over the Tâmega, which you can still walk across, and a museum about the Roman baths discovered in the town.

In the centre, the highlights are the castle keep, Camões square with the town hall and the streets of houses with wooden balconies. Its hot springs feed the town's spa, and the pastel de Chaves pastry and the cured ham are the local specialities.

Free tours and guided visits

There is no free walking tour in Chaves. There is a guided walk of the town lasting an hour and a half, a full tour with tickets and a private tour.

There are also trips: by 4x4 through the area, the water route through Vidago and Verín, and a day in Trás-os-Montes with Montalegre and Boticas.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the bridge, the castle, the Roman baths museum and the old town. With two or three days you can take a thermal bath and visit Vidago or the villages of Trás-os-Montes.

Where to stay

The most convenient areas are the historic centre or the riverside, near the baths. On the outskirts there are hotels with parking and some with a spa, and in Vidago, a historic spa hotel.
