What to see in Esposende

Must-sees

Esposende is a quiet town on the Minho coast, at the mouth of the Cávado river. Its centre has a riverside promenade, the main church and the lighthouse, and it is part of the Litoral Norte natural park, with dunes, pine woods and long beaches.

Across the river are the pine wood and beach of Ofir and the village of Fão. To the south, in Apúlia, you can see the old windmills on the dunes and the fields where seaweed was once gathered as fertiliser.

Free tours and guided visits

There is no free walking tour in Esposende. What Civitatis has is a surf lesson on its beaches, lasting about two hours.

For guided visits the most practical options are Braga or Guimarães, less than an hour away, or Viana do Castelo, to the north, which do have city tours.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the centre and the riverside walk. As a beach base it works for several days, with Braga, Barcelos and Viana do Castelo close by for outings.

Where to stay

If you want a town and restaurants, sleep in the centre of Esposende. For beach and pine woods, Ofir or Fão, across the river, are better; for calm, Apúlia or Marinhas.
