What to see in Tavira

Must-sees

Tavira is one of the prettiest towns in the Algarve, crossed by the Gilão river and known for its large number of churches. The bridge of Roman origin, rebuilt several times, joins the two banks, and from the remains of the castle you can see the four-sided roofs typical of the town. The churches of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Misericórdia stand out in the upper town.

Facing the town is Tavira Island, a long strip of sand in the Ria Formosa reached by boat. To the west, Barril beach is reached on foot or by a little train, and is famous for its anchor cemetery. Nearby are the salt pans, with flamingos, and the village of Santa Luzia, the octopus capital.

Free tours and guided visits

There is no classic free walking tour in Tavira, but there are private tuk-tuk tours of the old town and a tourist train. The town is flat in its lower part and easy to explore on your own.

The most popular activities are boat trips around the Ria Formosa islands and dolphin watching. There are also hiking trips to the Benagil caves.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the old town, the castle and an afternoon on Tavira Island. With two or three days you can add Barril beach, Cacela Velha and Castro Marim. Tavira is half an hour from Faro by train and very close to the border at Ayamonte, so it makes a good first stop coming from Andalusia.

Where to stay

The historic centre, on both sides of the Gilão, has small hotels and guesthouses, with restaurants and the island ferry nearby. For direct beach access, the Pedras d'el Rei and Barril area has quiet apartments and resorts. In the countryside there are quintas and rural houses with a pool.
