What to see in São Brás de Alportel

Must-sees

São Brás de Alportel is a small town in the Algarve's interior, between the coast at Faro and the Serra do Caldeirão. For a long time it lived off cork, a history you can see in the cork-oak landscape around it. The Costume Museum, in an old house in the centre, displays clothes and objects that tell the story of traditional life in the area. In the centre, next to the main church, there is a viewpoint with views stretching to the sea.

Beside the church is the former bishop's palace, which served as the summer residence of the bishops of the Algarve. On the outskirts survives the Calçadinha, a stretch of cobbled road believed to have been part of the Roman road network running north from Faro, with an interpretation centre next to it. Very close by, already in the municipality of Faro, are the Roman ruins of Milreu, next to the village of Estoi.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in São Brás de Alportel. The activity you can book is a visit to a cork factory, where you see how cork-oak bark is worked from the moment it arrives in slabs to the finished product. The centre, the museum and the Roman road are easy to explore on your own. Inland Algarve trips that pass through the area also leave from Faro.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the centre, the museum and the Calçadinha. If you add the cork factory visit and the Milreu ruins, allow a full day. With a little more time you can head into the Serra do Caldeirão on mountain roads or go down to Faro and the beaches, about twenty minutes away by car.

Where to stay

Staying in the town or its surroundings is a good option if you want calm away from the busier coast. There are small hotels, guesthouses and, above all, quintas and rural houses with a pool among the hills. If you prefer more services, Faro is very close and has much more choice, plus the airport.
