Where to stay on the Catalan coast

What the Catalan coast is like

Catalonia has almost 600 km of coastline split into several areas: the Costa Brava in the north, with coves and fishing villages; the Maresme, with long beaches next to the railway; Barcelona and the Garraf, with Castelldefels and Sitges; and the Costa Dorada in the south, with fine sand and shallow water down to the Ebro Delta.

Which area to choose

For coves and scenery, the Costa Brava, from Tossa to Cadaqués. For good-value beach hotels well connected to Barcelona, the Maresme. For atmosphere and nightlife, Sitges. For families with children, Salou and Cambrils, for the fine sand and PortAventura.

When to go

June to September is high season and it’s best to book early, especially for August. In May, June and September the water is already pleasant and prices drop. Many hotels on the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada close from November to March.

Getting around

Rodalies trains run along the Maresme and the Garraf from Barcelona, and regional trains reach Tarragona and Salou. The Costa Brava is best explored by car or by bus from Barcelona or Girona. There are airports at Barcelona, Girona and Reus.
