What the Costa del Sol is like
The Costa del Sol is the coastline of Málaga, from Nerja to Manilva and Sotogrande, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and the biggest choice of hotels in Andalusia. It mixes big towns, developments, golf courses and the odd white village a few kilometres from the sea.
Which town to choose
Málaga is the base for combining beach, museums and an old town. Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola have beach hotels at every price and trains to the airport. Marbella and Puerto Banús are the most exclusive area, Estepona and Casares quieter, and to the east, Nerja, Torrox and Torre del Mar have coves and more of a village feel.
When to go
July and August, Easter and long weekends are the busiest dates. The winter is mild and many travellers from northern Europe spend whole months here, so the coast never empties completely.
Getting around
The local Cercanías train links Málaga airport with Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. For Marbella, Estepona and the east there are frequent buses, although by car you get everywhere faster on the A-7 and AP-7.
