Where to stay in Casares: the best areas

Upper town, below the fortress

The streets climbing from the Plaza de España towards the castle are the heart of the village. Staying here puts the Carlos III fountain, the centre devoted to Blas Infante and, at the top, the church of the Encarnación within easy reach. As evening falls and the coach trips leave, Casares gets its rhythm back: neighbours chatting in the square, tapas bars and total silence at night.

Accommodation means guesthouses, village houses and apartments with terraces. The slopes are steep and parking inside the village is tricky, so leave the car in the car parks at the entrance and walk up with light luggage. In return, you open the window and see the valley running down to the sea.

Countryside and Sierra Crestellina

Around the village are farmhouses and rural estates among cork oaks, orchards and pastures. From many of them you can see the white outline of Casares hanging from the hill. They are ideal for families with children, groups of friends and walkers, because the Sierra Crestellina trails start very close by. You need a car even to buy bread, but you gain space, a pool and clear skies for stargazing. With binoculars, it is easy to spot vultures gliding over the sierra.

Casares Costa

The municipality reaches the Mediterranean between Estepona and Manilva. Along that strip are housing developments, golf courses and apartments facing long, uncrowded beaches. It is the option if the sea is the main plan and the village will be an afternoon trip. The coast road links quickly with Estepona, Sotogrande and Gibraltar, and the Baños de la Hedionda are close by. Here there are supermarkets and restaurants open all year, although outside summer many developments are half empty.
