Cabárceno village

The village of Cabárceno, in the municipality of Penagos, borders the nature park. Sleeping here means getting into the park early, when the animals are most active and there are still few people. It is a small place, with stone houses and meadows, and hardly any shops. It is chosen mostly by families spending a whole day in the park who want to get back to rest without driving. For dinner, people usually drive to a neighbouring village.

Obregón and Villaescusa

Obregón, in the municipality of Villaescusa, is the park’s other natural gateway and is closer to Santander and the bay. From here you have good access to the roads to the city, so you can combine the animals with an afternoon at El Sardinero or in central Santander.

It is a busier everyday area than Cabárceno, useful if you are staying several nights and want to eat without travelling far.

Penagos and Sobarzo

South of the park, Penagos and Sobarzo mix scattered hamlets, meadows and green hills. They are places of mountain manor houses and rural stays, for anyone after silence and travelling by car. From here it is easy to carry on to the Pas valleys or to Puente Viesgo and its caves with prehistoric paintings. It is also the area furthest from the park’s entrance traffic.

Liérganes and La Cavada

In the Miera valley to the east, Liérganes adds a historic centre with a bridge, manor houses and restaurants, while La Cavada keeps the remains of the old cannon factory. It is the liveliest option in the area once evening falls: you have dinner in the village, stroll by the river and are back at the park in no time the next day. The narrow-gauge commuter train also links Liérganes with Santander.
