Where to stay in Coria: the best areas
Inside the walls
Inside the walls you experience Coria as it was: stone lanes, houses with coats of arms and the cathedral overlooking the plain. From here you walk to the castle, the Royal Prison Museum and the old-town convents without watching the clock. There are few places to stay and almost all are small, so book ahead for weekends and festivals. It suits couples and anyone coming for the heritage.
By the town gates
The streets that ring the old town on the outside, next to the gates into the walled area, have tapas bars, terraces and everyday shops. You stay a step from the cathedral but can park the car nearby, as the streets inside the walls are narrow. It is the middle ground for anyone wanting heritage and street life. In the evening these streets fill with locals out for a drink.
Modern Coria
Outside the old town spreads modern Coria, with wide avenues, supermarkets and most of the services. Places to stay here are more functional and it is easier to find a room. It is the option for business trips or for using Coria as a base for daily trips to Las Hurdes, the Sierra de Gata or the Gabriel y Galán reservoir. Street parking is usually easy, and petrol stations and garages are close at hand.
The Alagón plain and Puebla de Argeme
Below the cathedral hill, the Alagón plain and the dry bridge form a landscape of market gardens and riverbanks. Around it, and in Puebla de Argeme, a hamlet of Coria, there are rural cottages and farms for anyone after open country, silence and clear night skies. You will need a car, though the town is very close.
