Where to stay in Guadalupe: the best areas

Plaza de Santa María and the monastery

Sleeping by the square, at the foot of the monastery’s steps and façade, is the most rewarding way to stay in Guadalupe. You step out of your room to the towers, the fountain and the bars with terraces serving migas or roast kid. For the guided tour you only need to walk down to the square, and the souvenir shops, tourist office and restaurants are a few steps away.

In the late afternoon the coaches leave and the village falls quiet, with the monastery lit up. On a first visit or as a couple, a stay here has a special charm.

Best-rated in this area: Hospederia del Real Monasterio, with a score of 8.8 from 1,671 reviews.

The village lanes

Around the square the village spills into arcaded lanes, whitewashed houses and wooden balconies. Here you will find rural cottages and small apartments in old buildings, with a neighbourly feel and plenty of silence. The slopes are steep, though, and some streets are closed to cars, so ask where to park before arriving with luggage. In return, the upper windows look out over the village rooftops and the surrounding mountains, and at night you only hear the bells.

Outskirts and the Villuercas mountains

Along the roads out of the village, among the chestnut groves and olive trees of the mountains, there are country houses and rural stays with valley views. They are a good choice if you are coming to walk in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara geopark or simply to switch off. You will need the car to go up to the village for dinner, but the scenery and the very dark night sky, far from street lights, make up for it.

If you are travelling with a dog or children, these houses with land around them are more comfortable than a flat in the old town.
