Where to stay in Olivenza: the best areas
Walled town
Inside the bastions you will find almost everything you come to see: the Magdalena church, the castle, the ethnographic museum and the Misericordia. If you stay within this perimeter, every visit is a few minutes' walk away and you can stroll the whitewashed streets as night falls and the temperature drops. It is the most convenient option for a short break or a trip as a couple.
The streets are narrow and cobbled, and parking inside is not always easy. Ask about parking beforehand if you are arriving by car. An alternative is to leave it outside the walls and walk in through any of the gates.
By the Magdalena and the castle
This corner is the most monumental and photogenic. Staying here lets you see the Manueline church in the morning light and the floodlit keep at night. There are few places to stay and they fill up quickly at weekends and on public holidays, so book ahead. In return, you will be a few steps from the terraces where you can try técula mécula.
Outside the walls
The newer districts grow around the old town and towards the Badajoz road. They have wider streets, supermarkets and easier parking, and you can walk into the old town from them. They suit you if you are travelling by car with family or plan trips to Elvas and the Portuguese border.
San Jorge de Alor and San Benito
Olivenza has its own hamlets spread around the municipality, such as San Jorge de Alor and San Benito de la Contienda. They are small white villages, surrounded by olive groves and countryside, with rural houses for those seeking total calm. From there you will depend on the car, but you will have the countryside on your doorstep and reach Olivenza in a short drive.
