Villarreal de San Carlos

This is the small hamlet inside the national park, beside the EX-208 road. It has just a few houses, the information centre and some rural stays. Several waymarked walking routes start here, and by car you quickly reach the Salto del Gitano, Peña Falcón and the climb to Monfragüe castle.

It is the choice for anyone coming to watch birds from first light: griffon and black vultures, eagles and, in season, black storks. The choice is very limited, so book early and plan your dinner, as there are none of the services of a village.

Torrejón el Rubio

South of the park, on the same EX-208 that runs towards Trujillo, Torrejón el Rubio is a quiet dehesa village with rural cottages and the odd small hotel. It has bars and shops, welcome if you are staying several days. From here the Salto del Gitano and the castle are a short drive away, and it also works for combining Monfragüe with a visit to Trujillo, south along the same road.

Serradilla

On the western side, Serradilla is larger and known for the sanctuary of the Cristo de la Victoria. Its rural stays attract couples and photographers who prefer a village with a life of its own and fewer visitors. From here you can reach the Tagus area and the viewpoints in the west of the park.

Malpartida de Plasencia

On the northern edge, Malpartida de Plasencia is the gateway if you are arriving from northern Cáceres. It has more services and is a stone’s throw from Plasencia, good for dinner and a stroll round its historic centre. You have to drive a little further to the viewpoints, but it is worth it if you are travelling with family and want comfort.
