Where to stay in Jerte: the best areas

Jerte village

The village stretches along the N-110, with the Jerte river on one side and terraces of cherry trees climbing the slopes. Staying in the centre puts the bakeries, bars and shops selling valley produce a short walk away. There's little going on at night, so it suits those coming to rest after a day's walking. From here you can also drive to the other villages in the valley.

Gateway to the Garganta de los Infiernos

The rural houses and apartments in the part of the village facing the nature reserve are the option for hikers. You set off in the morning for Los Pilones without moving the car and walk back. In summer it's also the favourite area for families who want to swim in the pools. Choose accommodation with its own parking, as in spring the streets near the trails fill with cars.

Tornavacas and the pass

Tornavacas is the last village in the valley before the Tornavacas pass, where the road climbs towards Ávila. It's smaller and quieter than Jerte, with steep streets of stone and timber. This is where the Ruta del Emperador begins, the footpath that crosses the mountains to Jarandilla de la Vera. If you want to walk it or see the valley from above, staying here saves you journeys.

Cabezuela del Valle

Further down the valley, Cabezuela is the liveliest village in the area: it has more shops, restaurants and services, and keeps an old quarter of narrow streets and arcaded houses. It suits you if you're travelling in a group or with children and need variety for meals. From here you can drive up to Jerte on the same N-110 and you're also closer to Plasencia for a day out. In full blossom season, book well ahead in any of these villages.
