Where to stay in Jerez de los Caballeros: the best areas

Templar fortress and Santa María

The highest part of town brings together the fortress, the Torre Sangrienta (Bloody Tower) and the church of Santa María. If you stay nearby, you can look out from the wall first thing or at dusk, when almost no one is around. The streets are steep and some are narrow for cars. It is worth it if you like history and walking. Wear comfortable shoes: the cobbles and slopes are more tiring than they look.

Plaza de España and San Miguel

The Plaza de España is Jerez's meeting point. Here is the church of San Miguel, with its decorated brick tower, and around it are bars, shops and services. From this area you can walk to all the towers and to the birthplace of Vasco Núñez de Balboa. It suits you if you want to go out for tapas at night and walk back, or if you are travelling with children and prefer having everything close by.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Rural La Posada de las Cigüeñas, with a score of 8.6 from 822 reviews.

San Bartolomé quarter

Around the church of San Bartolomé, with its façade covered in tiles and ceramics, stretches a quarter of white houses and sloping streets. It is more residential and quieter than the square. Here you will mainly find houses and apartments for stays of several days, a good idea if you are travelling as a group or family. The slopes are demanding, so check beforehand whether the accommodation has somewhere to leave the car.

The surrounding dehesa

In the countryside around the town there are farmhouses and rural houses among holm and cork oaks, where Iberian pigs graze. It is the choice for switching off, watching the night sky and visiting the area's ham curing sheds and estates. Any trip, even going into town for dinner, will be by car.
