Where to stay in Trujillo: the best areas

Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor is spacious, with arcades, the equestrian statue of Pizarro and the church of San Martín. On its sides stand the Palacio de la Conquista and the palace of the Dukes of San Carlos. Staying here lets you look out over the square in the morning, before the visitors arrive, and eat on its terraces in the evening. The streets leading off it have bars and shops selling Extremaduran produce such as cheese and ham. The tourist office and the meeting point for guided visits are also very close.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Palacio de Santa Marta, with a score of 8.8 from 3,451 reviews.

La Villa

Above the square, inside the walls, is La Villa: the castle on the granite outcrop, the Pizarro House Museum and the church of Santa María la Mayor. The streets are stone, narrow and very steep, with almost no traffic. It is utterly silent at night, a place for those after history and calm.

With large suitcases or limited mobility, the climb is hard going.

The lower town

Below the historic centre, modern Trujillo has homes, shops and the bus station. The streets are flat and it is easier to park near your accommodation. From here you walk up to the Plaza Mayor in a few minutes. It suits those who prefer convenience and everyday services. Supermarkets and petrol stations are here too, handy if you are touring Extremadura.

Dehesa and the main roads

Trujillo is beside the A-5 motorway, between Madrid and Badajoz, and well connected with Cáceres. Around it are country houses in the middle of the dehesa, among holm oaks and granite boulders. They are for travellers with a car who want scenery and dark night skies, and to combine Trujillo with other villages in the area. Guadalupe and Monfragüe National Park are within day-trip distance.
