Plaza de España and Calle Menacho

Plaza de España, with the cathedral of San Juan Bautista and the town hall, is the starting point of almost any walk. Pedestrian shopping streets lead from it towards Calle Menacho and Plaza de la Soledad. Staying here puts everything within walking distance, with tapas bars on every corner, handy for a weekend break. At night the action centres on the streets around Plaza de la Soledad and the cathedral.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Gran Hotel Zurbarán, with a score of 8.6 from 10,339 reviews.

Plaza Alta and the Alcazaba

Climbing from the centre you reach Plaza Alta, with its colourful arcades, and the gate of the Moorish Alcazaba. Inside the walls are the Espantaperros tower and the Provincial Archaeological Museum. It is the most historic part of the city and the quietest at night. Bear in mind that the streets rise steeply from Plaza de España. From the walls there are good views of the Guadiana and its bridges.

Best-rated in this area: Akla Hotel Badajoz, with a score of 9.2 from 1,466 reviews.

Paseo de San Francisco and Castelar

Paseo de San Francisco, a large tree-lined square with kiosks, and Castelar park mark the southern part of the old town. Nearby is the MEIAC, the contemporary art museum built on the site of the old prison. It is a comfortable area for families, with shade and space for children, and the centre a few steps away.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Gran Hotel Zurbarán, with a score of 8.6 from 10,339 reviews.

Right bank of the Guadiana

Across the river, linked to the centre by the Puente de Palmas and the Puente Real, is the modern part of the city. There are newer buildings, wide avenues and views of the Alcazaba from the bank. The train station is also here.

The Guadiana riverside park connects both banks with paths for walking or running. If you are driving and plan to visit Elvas, in Portugal, leaving from this side takes you straight onto the border road.
