Zocodover and the cathedral

The streets around Zocodover, the liveliest square in the old town, make a good base for a first visit. From here Calle Comercio leads to the cathedral, and the Alcázar, home to the Army Museum, is just above. It is the area with the most bars, marzipan shops and bustle, and the busiest during the day, though it calms down at night. If you want to go out for dinner and walk back without long climbs, this is the most convenient location.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Carlos V, with a score of 8.9 from 6,661 reviews.

The Jewish Quarter

The western part of the old town has the Tránsito synagogue, Santa María la Blanca, the El Greco Museum and the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. Close by is Santo Tomé, the church that holds El Greco's most famous painting. The streets are narrow and steep, but at night it is completely silent. Choose it if you like unhurried walks and a more intimate atmosphere.

Puerta de Bisagra and La Antequeruela

Just outside the northern walls, next to the Puerta de Bisagra gate, is the practical choice if you are driving. There are car parks and, next to them, the Recaredo escalators take you up into the old town without effort. The Hospital de Tavera is a short walk away. The city buses that go up to Zocodover also pass through here.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Carlos V, with a score of 8.9 from 6,661 reviews.

El Valle and the train station

Across the Tagus, along the ring road, are the cigarrales (country estates) and the Mirador del Valle, with the most famous view of Toledo. It is a quiet area for sleeping with a view, but you will need a car or taxi to get to and from the centre.

If you come by train from Madrid, the Neo-Mudéjar station is on the Paseo de la Rosa. You can cross the Alcántara bridge and walk up to the old town, though with a suitcase it is better to take a bus.
