What the Costa de la Luz is like
The Costa de la Luz is the Atlantic coast of Cádiz and Huelva, from Tarifa to the mouth of the Guadiana, with long beaches of fine sand, dunes, pine forests and Doñana National Park in the middle. The levante wind makes it a kitesurfing destination.
Which town to choose
Cádiz and El Puerto de Santa María combine beach and city. Conil, Vejer, Zahara and Los Caños de Meca are the most sought-after area in summer, with coves and white villages, and Tarifa is the capital of the wind. In Huelva, Matalascañas, Punta Umbría, El Rompido, Islantilla and Isla Cristina have quieter, family-friendly beaches.
When to go
July and August fill the villages on the Cádiz coast, which have few hotels for the demand. June and September are good alternatives, and at Easter occupancy also rises a lot.
Getting around
The nearest airports are Jerez, Seville and Faro. There are buses between the towns, but a car is almost essential for going from beach to beach.
