Where to stay in El Rompido: the best areas

The harbour and village centre

Everything in El Rompido faces the river Piedras. Next to the fishing harbour and the promenade are the fish restaurants, the bars and the jetty for the boats that cross to the Flecha sand spit in season. Staying on these streets lets you reach the beach without a car and walk back for dinner.

It is the area with the most going on at night, although it never gets rowdy. It suits couples and families who want services close by. Boat trips and kayak hire for exploring the river also leave from here.

The lighthouse and upper town

On a rise, the lighthouse overlooks the village and the river mouth. The surrounding streets have houses and apartments with views of the river and the Flecha. They are a short walk from the harbour but quieter. At sunset, from up here you can watch the tide change the shape of the spit.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Fuerte El Rompido, with a score of 9.0 from 2,425 reviews.

Golf and residential developments

On the road to Cartaya there are developments and complexes with pools around El Rompido golf course. They offer space, gardens and their own parking, and work well for long stays or for playing golf. However, you need to drive down to the harbour and the boat, especially at night. Cartaya, with its square and castle, is the main town of the municipality and only a few kilometres away.

El Portil

To the east lies El Portil, already part of Punta Umbría. It has a beach open to the sea, with no boat needed, and a protected lagoon surrounded by pine forest, good for walking and birdwatching.

It is an option for anyone who wants sand on the doorstep all day. Punta Umbría and Huelva are a short drive along the coast road, which runs through pine woods.
