Old Town and Luna Castle

Rota’s old town is white and small, and you can walk round it in no time. At its centre is the castle of Luna, now the town hall, and a few steps away the parish church of La O, with its Gothic doorway. The narrow streets lead down to the port, where you can eat fresh fish and urta a la roteña, the local dish.

Staying in the old town means you can do everything on foot: stroll, go for tapas and walk down to the beach without looking for parking. It is the place for dinners and terraces in summer.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Duque de Najera, with a score of 9.0 from 1,084 reviews.

La Costilla

La Costilla beach starts beside the old town and stretches west with a wide promenade. There are apartments and seafront accommodation, and the sand is fine, with calm water. Families who want the beach and restaurants together usually prefer this area. At low tide you can see the fishing corrals, protected as a natural monument.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Duque de Najera, with a score of 9.0 from 1,084 reviews.

Punta Candor

Following the coast towards Chipiona you reach Punta Candor, a more open beach surrounded by pine woods. Here there are villas, campsites and scattered accommodation, and the atmosphere is far more relaxed than in the centre. People come for the pines, walks along the shore and quiet nights with the sound of the sea in the background. To go out for dinner in Rota you will want a car or a bike.

Costa Ballena

On the border with Chipiona is Costa Ballena, a coastal resort with golf, wide streets and apartments with pools. The beach is very long and there is room for your towel even in high season. It is designed for stays of a week or more, with golf or with children who need space. From here, a car is almost essential for getting around.
