Centre and Paseo de la Ribera

The streets around the Plaza de la Laguna, together with the Paseo de la Ribera, make up the liveliest part of Ayamonte. Staying here puts you on foot among the shopping streets, the terraces and the bars serving fish and mojama, cured tuna.

The boat that crosses the Guadiana to Vila Real de Santo António leaves from the quay, so you can pop over to Portugal without a car and be back for dinner. This is the area for anyone who wants to get to know the town and do it all on foot.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Don Diego by Ĥ, with a score of 8.5 from 1,789 reviews.

Barrio de la Villa

Climbing up from the port you reach La Villa, the oldest quarter, with steep streets and whitewashed houses. Here stands the Iglesia del Salvador, with views over the Guadiana and the Portuguese shore. Some old houses have been turned into small places to stay. It suits anyone looking for peace and quiet without straying far from the centre, which is a short walk downhill.

Isla Canela

To the south, between marshes and the sea, Isla Canela is where the beach accommodation is concentrated: large hotels, apartments and a golf course facing a wide beach of fine sand. It is the choice for families and sun holidays. To get to central Ayamonte you need a car or the bus, because the road crosses the marshes. You can also go by bike, on the cycle lane that runs alongside the road.

Best-rated in this area: Leo Rentals, with a score of 7.8 from 66 reviews.

Punta del Moral

Right next to Isla Canela, Punta del Moral is a small fishing village with a harbour and seafood restaurants. It shares the same beach but has more village life and dinners beside the boats.

North of town, by the International Bridge, is Costa Esuri, a development with golf and apartments for those who prefer a residential setting and a quick run to the Algarve on the motorway.
