The village

Zahara's centre is small, with low streets, next to the remains of the Castillo de las Almadrabas, where the almadraba tuna was once processed. Here are the church, the square and most of the bars and restaurants, with bluefin tuna the star dish in spring. The beach begins at the end of the streets.

It is the best choice if you want to do everything on foot and go out for dinner and drinks at night. In summer the terraces are lively and the village fills up.

Atlanterra

To the south, the road leads to Atlanterra, an estate of villas and apartments climbing the hillside facing the sea. It has long beaches, such as Atlanterra beach, and viewpoints looking along the coast as far as North Africa on clear days.

It is a very quiet area for relaxing, popular with families and couples. It is separate from the village, so you will need a car or bike to go out for dinner.

Cabo de Plata and Playa de los Alemanes

At the far end of Atlanterra the coast becomes wilder. Playa de los Alemanes is a wide cove of pale sand and clear water, sheltered by Cabo de Plata. Around it are holiday homes among the pines. It suits you if you are looking for nature and do not mind relying on the car for everything. In summer the access road gets jammed, so staying close saves you hunting for parking.

Río Cachón and towards Barbate

North of the village, the mouth of the Cachón river marks the start of a straight, open beach stretching towards Barbate. In this part you will find beachside accommodation with more space and fewer houses around. From here you can reach the centre by walking along the shore. Bear in mind the levante wind, which blows hard along this whole coast.
