Inside the walls

Inside the walled enclosure, in the streets around the church of the Divino Salvador, the castle and the old Jewish quarter, places to stay are whitewashed houses with patios and roof terraces. From the terraces you can see the countryside and, on clear days, the coast. In the morning you will have the alleys almost to yourself before the visitors arrive. Remember that cars cannot enter this part. It is the choice of couples and of anyone coming to stroll, eat well and rest, with no other plans.

Plaza de España and La Corredera

Just below the walls, Plaza de España is Vejer’s social hub, with terraces around its ceramic fountain. Very close by, Calle de la Corredera looks out like a balcony over the countryside. Many restaurants and bars are here, and the streets are a little less steep. It suits anyone who wants to go out to dinner and walk back.

The windmills

Towards the newer part of the village, where the old windmills stand, there are wider streets, newer houses and some parking. The old town is a stroll away, and from here you can watch the sun set over the La Janda landscape. It is convenient if you are driving and want to get in and out without battling the slopes.

La Barca de Vejer

Down below, by the river Barbate and the coastal main road, La Barca de Vejer has roadside inns and stopover accommodation. It is useful if you arrive late, are touring the Cádiz coast in stages or want a quick getaway to Conil, Barbate or Tarifa.

Santa Lucía and the countryside
