Where to stay in Huelva: the best areas

Centre and Gran Vía

Huelva’s shopping centre is laid out between the Gran Vía, officially Avenida Martín Alonso Pinzón, Calle Concepción and Plaza de las Monjas. Around here are the Casa Colón, the Gran Teatro and the Mercado del Carmen, plus plenty of bars for prawns and fried cuttlefish. If you are coming for a few days and want to do everything on foot, look for accommodation on these streets.

The cathedral of La Merced is a little further north, in the district of the same name, a stroll from Plaza de las Monjas.

Best-rated in this area: Senator Huelva, with a score of 8.3 from 9,657 reviews.

Paseo de la Ría and the Muelle del Tinto

The city opens onto the Odiel estuary with a long promenade for walking or cycling. Its best-known image is the Muelle del Tinto, the iron pier built by the Rio Tinto mining company to load ore. It is an airier area with less traffic, good for a run or a sunset stroll. Across the water you will see the Monument to the Faith of the Discoverers, on Punta del Sebo.

Barrio Obrero and El Conquero

The Barrio Obrero, or Reina Victoria district, was built for workers of that same company, and its English-style houses are unlike anything in other Andalusian cities. Next to it rise the Conquero hills, with the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cinta and views over the marshes. It is a quiet residential area for anyone who does not need to be in the thick of things.

From Huelva you drive to La Rábida and the Wharf of the Caravels, in Palos de la Frontera, and to the beaches of Punta Umbría. If your trip revolves around them, sleeping in the city lets you combine them with its tapas scene.
