Where to stay in Los Caños de Meca: the best areas

Los Caños village

The village stretches along the Avenida de Trafalgar, between the sea and the pine forest. On one side are bars, beach bars and hippie-style shops. On the other, sandy coves at the foot of the La Breña cliffs, where trickles of fresh water fall onto the beach. That is where the name «caños» comes from.

If you want to go out at night and walk back, this is your place. In summer there is music and terraces until late, so do not expect total silence. Bear in mind that at high tide some coves almost disappear, so check the tide table before going down.

Zahora and the Trafalgar lighthouse

To the west, Zahora is a scattering of houses, campsites and places to stay among market gardens and dirt tracks. It lies next to the Trafalgar lighthouse, which stands on a spit of sand with fossil dunes. The beaches are wide and open, and the wind makes them popular for surfing and kitesurfing.

The atmosphere is more relaxed than in the village. There are few paved streets and almost no public transport, so bring a car or bike. Sunsets by the lighthouse draw crowds in summer, and from here you can walk there along the beach.

Towards the La Breña pine forest

To the east, the road to Barbate crosses the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park. There are scattered houses and rural stays among stone pines, with plenty of shade and quiet nights. From here starts the Torre del Tajo trail, running along the clifftop with sea views.

It is an area for those coming to rest and walk. For meals and the beach you will need to drive. Barbate, with its harbour and tuna restaurants, is at the end of the same road.
