Old town

Inside the walls, through the Puerta de Jerez, Tarifa is a maze of white streets with the church of San Mateo, the castle of Guzmán el Bueno and squares full of terraces. Staying here puts you a step from Playa Chica and the port, where ferries leave for Tangier and boats go whale and dolphin watching in the Strait. It is the place for anyone coming without a car who wants to go out to dinner and for drinks on foot.

In summer the streets are busy until late. The houses are old and many rooms look onto narrow alleys.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Tarifa -Recepcion abierta las 24h-, with a score of 8.5 from 3,903 reviews.

The newer town and the Alameda

Just outside the walls, between the Alameda and the newer streets leading to the main road, there are apartments and guesthouses with car access and a little more calm. From here you can walk into the centre and to the Isla de las Palomas, the southern tip of the peninsula. It is a balanced option for families who want services close by.

Los Lances beach

North of the town begins Los Lances, a huge golden beach protected as a nature area. Places to stay on its first stretch are a stroll from the old town, with the sea almost in front. It is kite and windsurf school territory, windy almost all year, so it suits anyone coming to sail or walk along the shore.

Valdevaqueros and the N-340

Following the N-340 towards Cádiz you find hotels, campsites and beach bars scattered among pine woods, all the way to Valdevaqueros and its great dune. The atmosphere is laid-back and surfy, with sunsets over the sea. Without a car or motorbike you will be isolated, as the distances between beaches are long.

Best-rated in this area: 100% Fun, with a score of 9.1 from 1,705 reviews.
