What to see in Olivenza

Must-sees

Olivenza was Portuguese until 1801, and that history shows in its streets, its architecture and its surnames. The main monument is the Manueline church of Santa María Magdalena, with columns that look like twisted ropes. Very close are the castle, with a very tall keep, and the church of Santa María del Castillo. Bastioned walls still surround much of the centre.

Inside the castle grounds is the Ethnographic Museum, with many rooms on trades and traditional life. Do not leave without seeing the Manueline doorway of the town hall and the tiles of the Santa Casa de Misericordia. The cobbled streets with whitewashed houses lead to gates such as the Puerta del Calvario. For an afternoon snack, try técula mécula, a local almond and egg-yolk sweet.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Olivenza. The usual options are guided visits to the historic centre, which explain the Portuguese heritage and the Manueline monuments. From here you can take a trip to Elvas, across the border, whose fortifications are a World Heritage Site. Another option is to combine it with Badajoz, about 25 kilometres away, or to visit the ruins of the Ajuda bridge over the Guadiana.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the main sights: the Magdalena church, the castle and the museum, which deserves at least an hour. Then wander aimlessly through the whitewashed streets of the centre. With a full day you can have a relaxed lunch and add Elvas in the afternoon, half an hour away by car. If you also want to see Badajoz, plan two days.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep inside the walls, near the main square and the Magdalena, where everything is a few steps away. Choice is small and family-run, with guesthouses and tourist apartments. If you want more options, Badajoz is close by and works as a base for visiting Olivenza and Elvas in the same day.
