Where to stay in Somiedo: the best areas

Pola de Somiedo

Pola, the main village of the municipality, sits at the bottom of the valley by the river, with shops, restaurants, a pharmacy and the park visitor centre, where you can get information on trails and path conditions. The roads to Valle de Lago, Saliencia and the Pigüeña valley start here, so you can choose a different route each day.

It suits you if you want to eat out without driving mountain roads at night. It fills up in summer and on long weekends, so book well ahead.

Best-rated in this area: PENSION CASA MIÑO, with a score of 8.5 from 348 reviews.

Valle de Lago

This mountain village sits at the end of its own road and is the starting point for the Lago del Valle, the largest natural lake in Asturias. The path follows a wide track through mountain pastures, suitable for almost anyone. Staying here lets you set off early, with fewer people around and a better chance of seeing wildlife.

It's the village for hikers who put nature before services.

Saliencia and La Farrapona

Climbing from Pola, the Saliencia valley leads up to the La Farrapona pass on the border with León. From there, trails lead to the Saliencia lakes, such as La Cueva and the Lago Negro, in a landscape of limestone and high pastures. The valley's villages are small and very quiet, perfect for mountaineers. The road to the pass is narrow and may close because of snow in winter.

Pigüeña valley

On the other side of the municipality, the Pigüeña river forms a more open valley with hamlets such as Villar de Vildas. From this village the path leads to the La Pornacal pastures, with their thatched teito huts. It's a quiet area of meadows and woods, good for watching wildlife through binoculars. It has less accommodation than Pola, so it's a very peaceful corner.
