Historic centre

Between Calle Galiana, La Ferrería and Calle Rivero you have the arcades, the squares and many of the city’s cider houses. Staying here means going out to dinner without watching the clock and walking back. At weekends it is lively until late, especially around Galiana. Bear in mind that many of these streets are pedestrianised and the car is better left in a public car park.

Ferrera park is right in the centre, a green breathing space that is very handy if you are travelling with children.

Best-rated in this area: Palacio de Avilés, Affiliated by Meliá, with a score of 9.1 from 1,933 reviews.

Sabugo

The old fishermen’s quarter keeps a village feel, with the old church of Santo Tomás de Canterbury near Plaza del Carbayedo. It is a residential area, quieter than the historic centre, although right next to it. It suits you if you want a local atmosphere with bars still close by.

Best-rated in this area: Palacio de Avilés, Affiliated by Meliá, with a score of 9.1 from 1,933 reviews.

The estuary and the station

Beside the estuary are the train station and the bus station, side by side. Local trains run from here to Oviedo, and there are frequent buses to Gijón and Asturias airport. If you will be travelling around the region without a car, this area saves you journeys.

A footbridge takes you across the water to the Niemeyer Centre, and the historic centre is a few streets away. It is also the best area if you arrive late by bus from another city.

Salinas

Salinas belongs to the municipality of Castrillón and has a long beach open to the Cantabrian Sea, with surf schools and a promenade. At one end is the viewpoint with its open-air anchor museum. It is the choice for a summer of sand and calm. Central Avilés is reached by bus or a short drive.
