Centre and the Roman Bridge

Staying in the centre puts the bridge over the Sella, the chapel of Santa Cruz and Avenida de Covadonga just around the corner, with cider houses, cheese shops and mountain gear stores. Many guided excursions and transfers for the canoe descent leave from here, so it suits anyone travelling without a car or wanting everything close by.

In summer and on long weekends the centre fills up. At night there is a terrace atmosphere, but without the buzz of a city.

The road to Covadonga

The road up to the shrine passes villages such as Soto de Cangas and the Real Sitio de Covadonga itself, with the Holy Cave and the basilica. Staying on this stretch brings you closer to the Lakes and the national park trails, and lets you set off early before the coaches arrive. It is an area of small hotels and village houses, surrounded by meadows and very quiet at night. Bear in mind that in high season driving up to the Lakes is restricted and you have to take the bus.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Santa Cruz, with a score of 8.8 from 3,632 reviews.

Arriondas and the Sella riverside

Downriver, Arriondas is the classic starting point for the Sella canoe descent. It has more services and a train station, and suits anyone combining the Picos with the eastern coast. From here you drive up to Cangas along the road that follows the river.

Corao and the valley villages

To the east, towards Benia de Onís, are hamlets such as Corao, near the church of Santa Eulalia de Abamia. They have rural houses surrounded by hills, ideal for families looking for space and for anyone planning to walk the Cares Route, which lies in the same direction. These villages are also a good base for visiting Cabrales cheese makers and exploring eastern Asturias by car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Rural El Espino, with a score of 9.2 from 1,196 reviews.
