Old town

Central Villaviciosa keeps arcaded streets, manor houses with coats of arms and the Romanesque church of Santa María de la Oliva. Charles V stayed in the Casa de los Hevia after landing in Asturias in 1517. In the evening the cider houses in the centre fill up, and pouring cider is almost a ceremony.

Sleeping in town gives you year-round services and good road links with Gijón and Oviedo. It is the most versatile base if you want to combine beaches, coastal villages and inland routes.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Avenida Real, with a score of 8.8 from 1,313 reviews.

Tazones

At the mouth of the estuary, on its eastern shore, is Tazones, the village where the future emperor came ashore. Its colourful houses tumble down to a small harbour with seafood and fish restaurants. Once the day visitors leave, it is very peaceful. It suits couples and anyone wanting a seafaring setting, with the lighthouse and the cliffs a stroll away, although there are few services and you need a car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Imperial, with a score of 8.5 from 296 reviews.

Rodiles and Selorio

On the western shore of the estuary lies Rodiles beach, a large stretch of sand backed by eucalyptus woods and within the estuary nature reserve. It has waves for surfing and plenty of space for families. Selorio and the surrounding villages have rural cottages and apartments, ideal if your plan is to spend the days by the sea.

Amandi and Valdediós

South of town begins the Asturias of apple orchards. Amandi, a short distance away, has the Romanesque church of San Juan. Further inland, in the Valdediós valley, stand the Cistercian monastery and the pre-Romanesque church of San Salvador, known as El Conventín. Rural hotels and village houses abound here, made for switching off and walking.
