Where to stay in Picos de Europa: the best areas

Cangas de Onís and Covadonga

Cangas de Onís is the Asturian gateway to the park and the town with the most services: restaurants, outdoor shops, Sella canoeing companies and the famous Roman bridge. From here you go up to the Covadonga sanctuary and the Enol and Ercina lakes, where car access is usually restricted in high season. It works for a first visit and for anyone who doesn’t want to give up the life of a larger town.

Arenas de Cabrales and Poncebos

Arenas de Cabrales is at the heart of Cabrales cheese country, with cheesemakers and ripening caves you can visit. A few kilometres away is Poncebos, the start of the Cares trail and the funicular to Bulnes. It is the base for hikers who want to be at the trailhead early. A little higher up, Sotres offers rural stays at altitude, with the Naranjo de Bulnes nearby.

The Valdeón valley

On the León side, Posada de Valdeón and Caín are small villages surrounded by peaks. Caín is the other end of the Cares trail, so sleeping here lets you walk the most spectacular stretch of the gorge before the crowds arrive. There are few beds and few shops, and the atmosphere is pure mountain. Getting there by car means narrow mountain-pass roads, such as the one down from El Pontón.

Potes and Liébana

On the Cantabrian side, Potes is the capital of Liébana, with the Torre del Infantado, stone bridges over the Quiviesa and plenty of places to try cocido lebaniego stew. Nearby are the monastery of Santo Toribio and, at the head of the valley, the Fuente Dé cable car. This is where travellers combining short walks, villages and good food stay. On Mondays the market fills the streets of Potes with stalls.
