Where to stay in Luarca: the best areas
The harbour and the river Negro
Luarca’s lower part wraps around the harbour basin and follows the river Negro, which crosses the town under several bridges. Here are the shops, fish restaurants and terraces facing the boats. Sleeping here has the advantage that everything is flat and you can get around effortlessly. It is the logical option if you are travelling without a car or with older people. The buses linking the town with Oviedo and other western coastal villages also stop here.
El Cambaral and La Atalaya
The old fishermen’s quarter climbs the hillside with steps and white alleys. Above it is La Atalaya, with the lighthouse, the chapel and the cemetery overlooking the sea. Staying here is for anyone who wants to wake up to coastal views and doesn’t mind climbing steps. The streets are narrow and it is hard to bring the car close, so travel light.

The town beaches
Past the harbour are the Primera and Segunda Playa, linked to the town by a short promenade. Around them are flats and holiday homes that suit families in July and August. Bear in mind that they are sand and pebble beaches, with tides that greatly change the space available. At high tide the sand shrinks, so check the tide table before heading down with a parasol.
Otur and Almuña
If you prefer the countryside, look at the nearby parishes. Almuña, almost joined to the town, has easy motorway access. Otur, to the west, has a wide beach, more open than those in the centre, and rural stays among meadows.
With a car, from here you quickly reach Cudillero, Cabo Busto, Puerto de Vega and Playa del Silencio.
