Plaza Mayor and nearby streets

Sleeping by the square lets you come down to breakfast among wooden balconies and watch it empty at dusk, when the coaches leave. Around you are taverns, anís shops and cellars dug under the houses, some open as restaurants. The streets leading down to the square are steep and cobbled, so with heavy suitcases ask about access beforehand.

At weekends the square fills up at midday; on weekdays you will have the terraces almost to yourself.

Upper town, church and castle

Climbing from the square you reach the church of the Asunción and the Clock Tower, which overlook the whole village. On another rise, already on the outskirts, stands the castle. This part is quieter and has rural houses with patios and views over the rooftops. It appeals to couples and to those happy to walk a few minutes in exchange for calm. At night the silence in its streets is almost complete.

Village entrance and outskirts

On the access streets, where the ground flattens out, there are places to stay with parking, more space and houses for groups. From here you walk down to the centre and back to your car without crossing the old town. It suits families, those arriving with a loaded car and anyone combining Chinchón with Aranjuez or the Tajuña valley.

Colmenar de Oreja

The neighbouring village, a few kilometres away, has its own arcaded Plaza Mayor, stone quarries and the museum devoted to the painter Ulpiano Checa. It is quieter than Chinchón and gets hardly any groups. It works as an alternative if there is no room in Chinchón or if you want to see another Las Vegas village at leisure, with its own wineries and cellars.
