Sol, Ópera and Plaza Mayor

This is the heart of Madrid and the easiest choice for a first visit. From here you can walk to the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, the Mercado de San Miguel and Gran Vía. Puerta del Sol has metro and local train (Cercanías) stations, so you are also well connected to Atocha, Chamartín and the rest of the city. It is busy at all hours.

Best-rated in this area: Dear Hotel Madrid, with a score of 9.2 from 13,945 reviews.

Barrio de las Letras

The streets running down from Plaza de Santa Ana to the Paseo del Prado put you next to the Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofía museums. Look down and you will see quotes from writers who lived here, such as Cervantes and Lope de Vega, set into the pavement. Calle Huertas fills with bars at night, so pick a side street if you want to sleep well.

Best-rated in this area: UMusic Hotel Madrid, with a score of 10.0 from 4,909 reviews.

Malasaña and Chueca

North of Gran Vía are the two neighbourhoods with the liveliest nightlife. Malasaña has old-school bars and vintage shops around Plaza del Dos de Mayo. Chueca is the centre of LGBTQ+ Madrid and has the Mercado de San Antón. Both are great for going out but noisy at weekends. Tribunal, Chueca and Gran Vía metro stations connect you with the rest of the city.

Best-rated in this area: Akeah Hotel Gran Vía, with a score of 9.4 from 7,010 reviews.

Salamanca and the Retiro

The Salamanca district is elegant and quiet, with the designer shops of Calle Serrano and wide avenues. Next door is Retiro Park, ideal if you are travelling with children or like a morning run. The metro gets you to the centre in a few stops.

Best-rated in this area: Vincci Soma, with a score of 8.3 from 7,880 reviews.

Paseo de la Castellana

If you are in town for work, the Castellana axis has the offices, the AZCA business district and Nuevos Ministerios, with a local train to the airport. Chamartín station, at the northern end, is handy if you are taking the train north. The Santiago Bernabéu stadium is also in this area.

Best-rated in this area: Meliá Madrid Serrano, with a score of 8.6 from 4,081 reviews.
