Centre and Coracera castle

San Martín's old town climbs from the arcaded square towards the large parish church of San Martín and the Coracera castle. Around it you have restaurants, bars and shops, all within walking distance. It's the right choice for a weekend visit to see the town, eat well and visit a local winery. Watch out for the slopes and for parking in the oldest streets.

San Juan reservoir

A few kilometres away, the San Juan reservoir is the big summer draw. Around the river beach, by the hermitage of the Virgen de la Nueva, and in the estates along the shore there are houses and apartments with pools or gardens among the pines. They're the choice for families and those coming to kayak, paddleboard or sail. Out of season the area empties considerably, and many lakeside bars open only in the warm months.

You'll need a car to go into town for dinner or shopping.

Pelayos de la Presa

This small village, right next to San Martín, holds the ruins of the old Cistercian monastery and sits by the reservoir dam. Its rural houses appeal to couples seeking calm who want the water and the monastery close by without the bustle of the bigger town.

Cadalso de los Vidrios

To the south, Cadalso de los Vidrios is a stone village among vineyards, with the Villena palace and its gardens. It has rural accommodation and an unhurried pace. It suits you if you're interested in wine and nature and also want to head towards the Sierra de Gredos or the Toros de Guisando, over the border in Ávila. From here central San Martín is a few kilometres away for dinner or shopping.
