Where to stay in Alcalá de Henares: the best areas

Calle Mayor and Plaza de Cervantes

Calle Mayor, arcaded from end to end, is the backbone of the historic centre. At one end is Plaza de Cervantes, with the Corral de Comedias and the university building, the Colegio de San Ildefonso. On Calle Mayor itself you will find the Cervantes Birthplace Museum and many bars that serve a free tapa with your drink.

It is the area for those who come to see the city on foot and go out for tapas. At weekends it is busy until late. The streets of the old town are flat and mostly pedestrianised, handy if you travel with a pushchair or older people.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Alcalá de Henares, with a score of 9.1 from 2,870 reviews.

Santos Niños and the Magistral

At the other end of Calle Mayor is Plaza de los Santos Niños, around the Magistral cathedral. Close by are the Archbishop’s Palace and Calle Libreros, with shops and student bars. It is a slightly less crowded side of the old town, convenient if you want the historic centre without being right on Plaza de Cervantes.

Around the station

North of the old town is Alcalá de Henares station, with local C-2 and C-7 trains to Atocha and Chamartín. The surrounding districts are residential and the historic centre is within walking distance. It suits you if you are combining Alcalá with visits to Madrid or travelling for work. Around the Paseo de la Estación there are cafés and local shops, and the atmosphere is quieter than on Calle Mayor.

Outer campus and the A-2

Beside the A-2 motorway are the university’s outer campus and Alcalá de Henares-Universidad station. The area has business parks and roadside hotels with parking. It suits those travelling by car, going to the university or with meetings in the business parks of the Henares Corridor.
