What the Pyrenees are like
The Pyrenees are the mountain range between Spain and France, from Navarre to Girona, with the highest peaks in the peninsula after Sierra Nevada. They have two national parks, Ordesa and Aigüestortes, and the biggest ski resorts in the country.
Which area to choose
In Huesca, the Aragonese Pyrenees have Jaca, Benasque, Formigal and Ordesa. In Lleida, Baqueira, the Pallars and the Boí valley, and in Girona, the Cerdanya and the Camprodon valley. In Navarre are Roncesvalles and the Baztán, Salazar and Roncal valleys, with the Irati forest.
When to go
From December to April for skiing, with the December long weekends and Easter as the busiest dates. In July and August the hikers arrive, and it’s best to book early in Ordesa and Benasque. In autumn the beech forests change colour and there are fewer people.
Getting around
You need a car for almost everything. Some mountain passes close with snow, so carry chains in winter and check road conditions before setting off.
