What to see in Guadalupe

Must-sees

Everything in Guadalupe revolves around the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, a World Heritage Site. Its outline of towers and battlements dominates the village from the Plaza Mayor, where the fountain and the great flight of steps make a very recognisable picture. Inside, Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles blend together, the result of centuries of pilgrimage and donations.

The tour of the interior includes the Mudéjar cloister, with its central shrine, the sacristy with paintings by Zurbarán and the Virgin’s dressing chamber. There are also museums of embroidery, illuminated books and painting. Outside the monastery, it is worth getting lost in the village lanes, with arcades, wooden balconies and white houses. The surrounding area is part of the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara geopark.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours as such here. The guided tour of the monastery is the usual way to see it, as the main rooms can only be visited in a group with a guide. The village is easy to explore on your own. To round off your stay there are excursions and nature trails in the geopark, with mountains, chestnut groves and viewpoints. Footpaths leaving from the village itself let you discover the Villuercas landscape without a car.

How long to spend

Allow at least half a day: an hour and a half to two hours for the guided tour of the monastery and another couple of hours to stroll round the village and have lunch. If you stay the night, you can spend the next day on a hiking route in the geopark. That gives the trip a relaxed pace and lets you enjoy the calm of the evening, when the day visitors have gone.

Where to stay

Ideally, stay in the centre, in the streets around the Plaza Mayor and the monastery. Everything is a few steps away and at night the village becomes very quiet. Guadalupe is small and steep, so staying near the square saves you the climbs. If you want more nature, the villages and rural cottages of the area have places to stay surrounded by hills.
