Where to stay in Oropesa: the best areas

Old town and the castle

Oropesa sits on a ridge, with the castle at the highest point. Around it are the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, mansions with coats of arms on their façades and cobbled streets you can cover in a short walk. From the high points you can see the Sierra de Gredos to the north, with snow on the peaks for much of the winter.

Sleeping in the old town is for those seeking a quiet night with history. There are few bars and restaurants, so the village sets the pace, falling silent as soon as evening comes. It appeals to couples and to travellers stopping for a night on their way to Extremadura who want something more than a service station.

Best-rated in this area: Casa Rural La Botica, with a score of 9.1 from 610 reviews.

Lagartera

A few kilometres to the west is Lagartera, known throughout Spain for its embroidery and traditional dress. Its streets have workshops and houses selling handmade needlework, and it is not unusual to see the embroiderers working at their doors. It is a small, very quiet village, an alternative to Oropesa if you are interested in crafts and want to get a little further from passing traffic.

By the A-5

The Extremadura motorway runs south of the village, and at its exits there are places to stay designed for those travelling between Madrid and Badajoz or Portugal. They suit you if you are breaking the journey halfway and want to hit the road early.

Although the old town is not on your doorstep, driving up to the castle takes no time at all. It is also a good position for visiting Talavera de la Reina, El Puente del Arzobispo or the foothills of Gredos in the Tiétar valley.
