Staying near the Bernabéu: what you need to know

What is the Bernabéu?

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has been Real Madrid’s home since 1947, right on the Paseo de la Castellana in the Chamartín district. After the major redevelopment of recent years, with a retractable roof and a new façade, it holds more than 80,000 spectators. The museum and stadium tour open almost every day of the year, even when there is no match.

How to get there

Santiago Bernabéu metro station (line 10) is right by the stadium. Less than a kilometre to the south, Nuevos Ministerios brings together lines 6, 8 and 10 and the Cercanías trains; from there line 8 runs straight to the airport. The centre, at Sol, is about twenty minutes away by metro.

When the hotels fill up

The football season runs from August to May. Champions League nights midweek and the games against Barcelona or Atlético are the busiest dates, including for the business hotels on the Castellana, which are already busy with corporate travel during the week. If you are going to a match, book as soon as the date and kick-off time are confirmed.

Which area to choose

Around the stadium you will mostly find city hotels for business trips, between the AZCA financial district and the Castellana. If you want somewhere lively for dinner or a drink, Calle Ponzano and Chamberí are about twenty minutes’ walk to the south.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Madrid city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Madrid.
