What is the Gran Vía?

The Gran Vía was built between 1910 and the late 1920s to link the Calle de Alcalá with today’s Plaza de España: just over a kilometre of early 20th-century buildings. Along it stand the Metrópolis Building, the Telefónica headquarters, which was Madrid’s first skyscraper, and the Plaza de Callao, with its cinemas and the famous Schweppes neon sign.

Getting around from here

There are four metro stations along the street or at either end: Banco de España (line 2), Gran Vía (1 and 5), Callao (3 and 5) and Plaza de España (2, 3 and 10). The Puerta del Sol is a five-minute walk down Montera or Preciados, and the Royal Palace about fifteen.

When rooms are hardest to find

This is Madrid’s musical theatre district, so weekends are busy all year round. In December the Christmas lights and shopping add to the demand, and in summer, international tourism. For Fridays and Saturdays it is worth booking ahead.

What to bear in mind for a good night’s sleep

The street has traffic and crowds until the small hours: if you are a light sleeper, ask for an inside room or stay on a side street. North of the Gran Vía begin Malasaña and Chueca, with bars and small shops; to the south lies the area around Sol, Ópera and the Plaza Mayor, with more of the monuments.
