What is Retiro Park?

The Parque del Buen Retiro was a royal garden until 1868 and is now the great park in the centre of Madrid, covering more than a hundred hectares. It has the large boating lake with the monument to Alfonso XII and rowing boats for hire, the Crystal Palace from 1887 and the rose garden. Together with the Paseo del Prado it has been a World Heritage Site since 2021, as the Landscape of Light.

How to get there

Retiro metro station (line 2) is at the gate on Calle de Alcalá, next to the Puerta de Alcalá; Ibiza (line 9) serves the eastern side and Atocha the south. The Prado sits right against the western side of the park, and the Puerta del Sol is about twenty minutes’ walk away.

When rooms are hardest to find

The park is a pleasure all year round, but spring and autumn are its best seasons. In late May and early June it hosts the Book Fair, and on many weekends there are fun runs that start or finish here.

Which area to choose

North of the park is the Salamanca district, with shops and restaurants; to the east, Ibiza and Niño Jesús, residential and quiet; to the west, Los Jerónimos and the Barrio de las Letras, with the museums.
