Staying near the Salamanca district: what you need to know

What is the Salamanca district?

The Salamanca district is the extension of the city that the Marquis of Salamanca began building in the mid-19th century east of the Castellana and north of the Retiro. Its streets form an orderly grid, with stately buildings and grand doorways. Serrano, Velázquez, Claudio Coello and Calle Ortega y Gasset, the so-called Golden Mile, are home to the fashion and luxury shops, surrounded by restaurants, galleries and the National Archaeological Museum.

How to get there

The metro crosses the district at several points: Serrano and Velázquez (line 4), Núñez de Balboa (5 and 9) and Goya (2 and 4). From the airport, line 8 connects with line 4 at Mar de Cristal, and a taxi takes about 20 minutes. The Puerta del Sol is a quarter of an hour away by metro, or a little longer on foot through the Retiro and along Alcalá.

When rooms are hardest to find

When there are big fairs at IFEMA, 15 minutes away by car, and on concert nights at the Movistar Arena, on the eastern edge of the district by Goya. The December long weekends and the sales, which bring shoppers from outside Madrid, also fill its hotels.

Which area to choose

It is one of the quietest and safest areas to stay in Madrid, with four- and five-star hotels around Serrano and the Castellana. Towards Goya and Manuel Becerra there are somewhat more affordable options and more neighbourhood life. The Retiro is a short stroll away. This page looks up to 800 metres from Calle Velázquez, in the middle of the district.
