What is the Plaza Mayor?

The Plaza Mayor was completed in 1619 and is the great arcaded square of Habsburg Madrid, with the equestrian statue of Philip III in the middle and the Casa de la Panadería, with its painted façade, on one side. Next to it are the San Miguel Market and the Cava de San Miguel, lined with old taverns.

How to get there

Sol (lines 1, 2 and 3 and Cercanías) and Ópera (lines 2 and 5) are about five minutes’ walk away. The Royal Palace is ten minutes to the west and La Latina just to the south.

When rooms are hardest to find

In December, when the Christmas market fills the square with stalls, at Easter, on the May long weekends and during the San Isidro festival. For most of the year, weekends are the priciest time in the centre.
