What is the Plaza de España?

The Plaza de España closes off the western end of the Gran Vía. In the middle stands the monument to Cervantes, with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and it is framed by two of Madrid’s first skyscrapers, the Edificio España and the Torre de Madrid. The makeover finished in 2021 made it more pedestrian-friendly and linked it to the gardens of the Royal Palace and the Temple of Debod.

Getting around from here

Plaza de España metro station brings together lines 2, 3 and 10, with Noviciado next door. On foot, the Temple of Debod, the Egyptian temple given to Spain in the 1960s, is five minutes away; the Royal Palace ten, and Madrid Río about twenty down the Cuesta de San Vicente.

When rooms are hardest to find

Like the rest of the centre, it is busy at weekends all year round, at Christmas and in summer. Being at one end of the Gran Vía, it is usually a little quieter at night than Callao or Sol.
