What is Atocha?

Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes is the busiest railway station in Spain. High-speed trains leave from here for Andalusia, Barcelona, Valencia and Toledo, and it is also the city’s main Cercanías commuter hub. The old iron-and-glass train shed from 1892 still stands next to the modern platforms.

Getting around from here

Metro line 1 stops in the station itself and takes you to Sol and Tirso de Molina in a few minutes. On foot, the Reina Sofía museum is just across the roundabout, the Prado and the Botanical Garden are about ten minutes up the Paseo del Prado, and the southern gate of the Retiro is a quarter of an hour away. For the airport, Cercanías trains leave from the station’s own platforms.

When rooms are hardest to find

Hotels next to the station fill up on Friday and Sunday evenings, with people arriving or leaving by train, and on long weekends, at Easter and at the start of August. If your train leaves early, it pays to sleep less than 500 metres away: you can walk over with your suitcase without relying on the metro.

Which area to choose

To the north lies the Barrio de las Letras, with pedestrian streets, tapas bars and the museums close by. To the west begins Lavapiés, more down-to-earth and lively until late. To the east and south, around Pacífico and Méndez Álvaro, the feel is residential and quieter, with wide avenues and fewer tourists.
