Where to stay in Ávila: the best areas

Inside the walls

The walled enclosure holds almost everything you will want to see: the cathedral, Plaza del Mercado Chico, which is Ávila's main square, and palaces such as that of the Verdugo family. Staying here lets you explore the centre early in the morning and at night, when the streets are silent. Distances are short and you will not need the car at all. Bear in mind that traffic inside the walls is restricted.

Mercado Grande and San Pedro

Just outside the Alcázar gate opens Plaza de Santa Teresa, which locals call the Mercado Grande. At the far end is the church of San Pedro, and around it are terraces, shops and places to eat a chuletón steak or try the yemas sweets. It is a lively and very well-placed area, for anyone who wants the centre a step away and a bit more life. Very close by is the convent of Santa Teresa, built over the saint's birthplace.

Best-rated in this area: Palacio de los Velada, with a score of 8.6 from 7,781 reviews.

Around the Basilica of San Vicente

On the north side of the walls, next to the Basilica of San Vicente, the area is quieter and has easy access to the old town through the gate of the same name. The path for viewing the walls from outside also starts here. It is a good option if you arrive by car, because it is easier to park nearby than inside the old town.

The station and the river Adaja

If you come by train from Madrid, the streets around Paseo de la Estación keep you close to the platform and a walk from the walls. At the other end, across the river Adaja, is the Cuatro Postes viewpoint, the best place to see the whole city. This part suits anyone looking for slightly lower prices who does not mind walking. From the station you reach the centre along shopping streets.
