Historic centre and Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor is the heart of life in El Barco. Close by are the church of La Asunción, Gothic in origin, and the remains of the walls, and a few minutes' walk takes you to the castle of Valdecorneja. Around it are the restaurants where you can order the famous El Barco beans.

It is the most convenient area if you are coming for a weekend to see the town and want to get around without a car. Accommodation is guesthouses, small hotels and apartments.

Banks of the Tormes

Below the town flows the Tormes, crossed by a medieval stone bridge. On the bank there are green areas and walks, and in summer the river fills with people coming to cool off. Staying near the water is a good idea if you are travelling with children or like an early walk. The view of the castle from the bridge is one of the town's best-known images.

From here the old town is a short walk uphill.

Upstream, towards Gredos

Following the Tormes upstream you come to small villages such as Los Llanos de Tormes, with stone rural houses and views of the peaks of the Sierra de Gredos. It is the choice of hikers and mountaineers who want to be closer to the routes and away from noise.

Without a car it is hard to get around this part.

Aravalle valley

The Aravalle valley opens out next to El Barco, with villages such as Puerto Castilla and Umbrías among meadows, oaks and cold-water gorges. There are rural houses for groups and families looking for nature and cool nights even in high summer. To eat out or shop, people usually drive down to El Barco. Bring something warm: even in August it gets cool when the sun goes down.
