Where to stay in Salinas de Añana: the best areas
Salinas de Añana village
The village huddles on the hillside above the Valle Salado, with steep streets, stone houses and the convent of San Juan de Acre. Staying in the village lets you look out over the salt pans at dusk, when the light colours the salt and the day visitors have gone.
Accommodation is limited and almost all rural tourism, with few places to eat. It suits couples and those who want to see the valley at leisure, and it is worth booking a table ahead.
By the Valle Salado
The houses on the lower edge of the village are right at the entrance to the salt works, where the route along the wooden platforms and the channels carrying the brine begins. It is the most sensible location if you are doing the visit first thing or repeating a salt workshop. At night the silence is almost total.
Lake Arreo and Caicedo Yuso
A short distance to the north is Lake Caicedo Yuso-Arreo, a protected saline wetland surrounded by reeds and Portuguese oaks. The villages around it are tiny and surrounded by cereal fields. Choose this area if you are travelling with children or like walking: there are gentle paths round the lake and hardly any traffic.
Tuesta and Espejo
To the west, Tuesta has a Romanesque church with a carved doorway, and Espejo, in the Valdegovía valley, offers a few more services. Both work as a base for those getting around by car who want to link Añana with the villages of Valdegovía, the Valle de Losa or the Sierra de Arcena. Vitoria is a little under an hour away by road, so the area also fits a break from the Álava capital.
